Welcome to the Sports Department

Portobello Institute deliver their popular Sports Courses at Croke Park Stadium

The autumn of 2014 was an exciting year for Portobello's sports department -we launched two new degree programmes to the sports schedule- Sports Therapy and Sports Science & Physical Education.  Both can be studied full time over 3 years.  Our aim is to build on this suite of degree programmes over the coming years.  The sports sector is thriving at the moment and here at Portobello Institute we are passionate about developing a wide variety of sports courses and pride ourselves on being an innovative college at the cutting edge of changes and developments within the sports and fitness Industry.

Other full and part time course range from Sports Therapy, Gym Instructor and Personal Trainer through to Strength and Conditioning, which are ITEC and QQI accredited courses and provide a fantastic foundation for a career in the Sports Industry or further education.  Tailored workshops are also available throughout the year.

All of our courses have both theory and practical elements and all of our course tutors have vast amounts of experience in the Sports industry with many still working in the industry so our students gain a real insight into working in the sector.

We recently had some of our sports students complete their ITEC practical exams. The ITEC external examiner was thrilled with the particularly high standard of our students and commented “ the case studies and course work are of an extremely high standard and the best he has seen in a long time, this is testament to the commitment and high standard of the tutors and team looking after these students".

You can read all about our knowledgeable and dedicated tutors here.

Keep an eye on our blog and facebook page too, we regularly update them with information on what's happening in the industry, guest lectures that will be joining us and what some of our students get up to during and after their studies.

One student who is making her mark is Sport Science & PE student Thammy Nguyen. She is delighted to be the first Irish female to compete at the 2015 weightlifting world championships in Texas.

We were delighted to have legendary Ronnie Delaney join us in Croke Park recently to speak to our sports students about his early childhood and events that led to him becoming an Olympian champion- you can read about his visit here.

Some of our sports therapy students were chuffed to meet the Notorious Conor McGregor down in Croke Park recently when he was doing a promo for his next fight- have a look here!
