The main aim of the ITEC Level 3 Award in Nutrition for Physical Activity is to enable learners to gain the practical and theoretical skills necessary to provide nutritional advice for active leisure, recreation and physical activity. It includes the ability to explain the meaning of key nutritional terms including: diet, healthy eating, nutrition and balanced diet. In relation to physical activity levels and other relevant factors, to identify energy expenditure for different physical activities and to evaluate the nutritional requirements and hydration needs of clients engaged in physical activity.

Entry Requirements

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. There are no previous academic requirements.

Class Sizes

We are committed to ensuring you gain the most, academically and personally, during your study time with Portobello.  To facilitate this, we limit our class sizes to a maximum of 14 students on part-time programmes. With these uniquely small classes, we create the environment for you get to know everyone in your group, you can then feel comfortable and confident to ask questions and our tutors have the time to attend to the needs of each and every student. Many of our students tell us of the lifelong friendships they have made during their study time with Portobello.

Assignment Support

We understand the challenge of completing assignments at third level, the new skills and the change in thinking sometimes needed to put on paper, all that you have learned. We offer our students the opportunity to submit a draft assignment for informal feedback before submitting the final version. We care about your success, we want you to achieve the best you can and we offer you the individual support to acquire the skills you need to communicate what you have learned whilst studying with Portobello Institute.

Course Structure

This course currently runs 1 evening per week for 14 weeks.

  1. Understand the principles of nutrition
  2. Understanding key guidelines in relation to nutrition
  3. Understand nationally recommended practice in relation to providing nutritional advice
  4. Understand the relationship between nutrition and physical activity
  5. Understand how to collect information relating to nutrition
  6. Understand how to use nutritional information
  7. Understand the principles of nutritional goal setting with clients
  8. Be able to collect and analyse nutritional information
  9. Be able to apply principles of nutrition to a physical activity programme

Course Progression

Once Learners have achieved the ITEC Level 3 Award in Nutrition for Physical Activity they may progress on to other ITEC or equivalent awards at Level 3 (Instructor level), for example;
