The Sports Coaching / Team Working course aims to introduce the learner to the skills required to effectively coach an individual or team. As a sports coach / Team Leader, you will be able to identify the technical, tactical and team skills required for an individual or team to participate in a particular sport while promoting an enjoyable and positive experience for participants.

Entry Requirement

Entry to this course is by direct application to the college. There are no previous academic requirements.

Class Sizes

We are committed to ensuring you gain the most, academically and personally, during your study time with Portobello.  To facilitate this, we limit our class sizes to a maximum of 14 students on part-time programmes. With these uniquely small classes, we create the environment for you get to know everyone in your group, you can then feel comfortable and confident to ask questions and our tutors have the time to attend to the needs of each and every student. Many of our students tell us of the lifelong friendships they have made during their study time with Portobello.

Assignment Support

We understand the challenge of completing assignments at third level, the new skills and the change in thinking sometimes needed to put on paper, all that you have learned. We offer our students the opportunity to submit a draft assignment for informal feedback before submitting the final version. We care about your success, we want you to achieve the best you can and we offer you the individual support to acquire the skills you need to communicate what you have learned whilst studying with Portobello Institute.

Course Structure

This is a part time course delivered over 10 weeks.

Course Content Modules

  1. Skill related competencies
  2. Motives and needs monitor personal strengths and weaknesses as a team participant, including interpersonal communication skills and problem solving skills
  3. Physical fitness
  4. Mental (Psychological) fitness
  5. Game-Related competencies
  6. Team play
  7. Playing rules, Injury prevention and First Aid management
  8. Planning and evaluation in setting team objectives and subsequent evaluation, to include control mechanisms such as ongoing feedback and documentation and performance measurement
  9. Coaching related competencies; analysis of the roles, responsibilities, characteristics and skills of team members, including leaders, coaches and trainers
  10. Skill Development; an analysis of the elements and stages of team development (strong practical emphasis)
  11. Practice and Competition (strong practical emphasis)
